Company Background

AMS Workplace Technology was originally founded as Advanced Micro Systems, Inc. in 1987 as one of the first Autodesk resellers. Brad Whittemore, the founder of the company was an entrepreneur who bundled build-to-suit generic desktop computers (called “clones”) together with AutoCAD software as a turnkey CAD solution for engineers and architects. Brad then began bundling additional software solutions with CAD such as AutoScript for the postscript printing industry and continued to follow that path to offering Cyco Software’s (now BlueCielo) document management software. AMS enjoyed many years of success in document management in the ’90s by providing AutoCAD support and document management software solutions.

Brad Whittemore and Dan Lorenz

Dan Lorenz, the current President and owner of AMS, started in 1996 as an Applications Engineer and quickly learned the ropes of demonstrating, consulting, configuring, training and supporting document management software. In addition, Dan led a team to bring new AMS design automation solutions, essentially custom-developed AutoCAD add-ons, to AMS CAD customers. These included web-based standards libraries, project web sites, and OEM AutoCAD solutions. AMS became a part of the Autodesk Developer Network as well as a Certified Training Center. The success of AMS at CAD customers would soon lead to opportunities in CAFM.

In 2002, AMS’ largest customer, one of the big pharmaceutical companies in the area, asked Dan to evaluate a software package they had in place that they liked, but felt had been poorly implemented and worked with AutoCAD. The software was FM:Space, by FM:Systems, Inc., a Computer Aided Facilities Management software that tracked facilities space, personnel, and departments along with other modules for managing moves, strategic planning, assets, and maintenance. Dan immediately knew this software was special because it was cleverly designed to be highly configurable without requiring custom coding.

In 2018, the CAFM Division had outgrown the Autodesk CAD Division so significantly that Brad and Dan made the decision to sell the Autodesk business to a Platinum Reseller, Hagerman. In addition, AMS had outgrown their existing office space and moved into a new, custom-built office suite down the road in Fairfield, NJ. The new space was built-out with FM technology in an open plan, much like AMS' customers have designed. The new space became a showroom for FM:Systems and related FM technology such as room reservations, barcodes, and utilization sensors. It was also time for Brad to enjoy the fruits of his labor, selling his half of the company to Dan and moving on to enjoy a happy retirement with his family.

Now AMS has grown to over 25 team members that exclusively implement FM:Systems software solutions as a Certified Premier Business Partner. They continue to develop leading-edge FM technology solutions such as ServiceNow integration, barcoding technology, and mobile apps such as Visitor Management and Employee Experience solutions. The company has also begun spreading out over the U.S. to cover more of its customers locally in New Jersey, staffing up in California, Texas, Pennsylvania, New England, and even internationally in Canada. In 2021, AMS changed their DBA (doing business as) name and domain to better reflect the target services they provide as AMS Workplace Technology (amsworkplace.com). This coincided with a reboot of their web site with a more modern look and more available content. AMS has become one of the most well-respected IWMS providers in the industry and continues to be a leader in bringing innovative technology solutions to FM:Systems customers.
