Boost Asset Data Collection & Inspections with Barcodes

AMS are the experts in implementing multiple barcoding systems with FM:Interact and FM:Mobile to allow for the efficient processing and managing of assets. We offer scan-and-go solutions together with Bluetooth hardware scanners or through use of mobile device cameras for streamlined asset workflows.

Asset Management

One of the most popular areas to perform barcoding is in asset collection and management. Essentially, a customer wants to understand “What do we have?”. Barcoding can make it easy to identify (ID) and track assets in the Asset Management module of FMS:Workplace. Using the ID, a user can add or edit assets while in the field using FM:Mobile. By scanning the barcode, action can be taken to perform a number of actions for that asset:

  • Lookup Service History
  • View Asset Info (Warranty, Meter Reading, Manuals, Vendors)
  • Add Asset
  • Edit Asset
  • Create Work Order for Asset
  • Lookup Parts
  • Zoom to Asset Location on Floor Plan

The barcode provides a unique ID to take action against an asset while in the field using your mobile device.

Inspections

Barcoding can also be used for workflow activities such as inspections. Life Safety inspections such as Fire Extinguisher checks can be streamlined using FM:Mobile and barcoding. AMS can help tailor your FM:Mobile forms to allow for step-by-step questions when inspecting an asset, guiding you through the process to make these inspections go quicker by scanning assets and replacing paperwork with automation.

Other workflows such as personnel updates for workstation assignments during a field verification and space observation studies can also be collected, scanning a barcode value of a room or workstation to speed up the process.

Label Options

You might think that barcode labels are special and difficult to create. In fact, you can use tools such as Microsoft Word and Excel to perform mail-merges and use a FREE Windows font to generate them yourself using standard printer label sheets!

Too many to print? Need more rugged labels that can withstand the elements or direct sunlight? There are plenty of companies that offer labels to purchase with different sizes, colors, and durability as needed. It’s easy to get started and do a trial run using your own labels and you can always scale from there as needed.

Mobile Camera or Bluetooth Scanner

Using FM:Mobile, you can add the ability to barcode scan with a Bluetooth barcode reader that pairs to your mobile phone. AMS recommends barcode readers from Socket Mobile that can read 1D traditional or 2D QR barcodes. These come in a variety of sizes and types to work with your phone via Bluetooth and basically act as a keyboard. Any location you are currently at in your phone will simply type in the barcode value when it is scanned. This means you can scan values into email or text messages, notes, or any screen you are using in FM:Mobile for asset management!

When you want to use your mobile device’s camera for the scan, AMS offers the use of an Android or iOS app to basically “host” FM:Mobile and add barcoding capability. The app essentially is a wrapper for the FM:Mobile website that allows the phone or tablet’s camera to scan the barcode. You can use it to scan and take action on the asset with an integrated menu to locate, view, edit, or create a work order. The app frees you up from buying any additional scanning hardware for your barcoding solution in FM:Mobile.
